Dear Dr Cris, I hear people talking about alkaline water. Is there really any benefit in drinking it?
Thank you Ann for your question regarding the benefits of alkaline water. After much research and trying alkaline water myself, I’ve learned that there is not a consensus regarding its benefit or detriment. But perhaps the information noted below may be useful to you in making a decision to try it or not.
Through my research I learned that there are more experts that support alkaline water than those who do not. For example, according to an article written by Robert Slovak, who is an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineer with over 30 years in the water treatment industry. He states that alkaline water is not sufficient to neutralize the acid in our body.
“The only thing that neutralizes acid is alkalinity, not the water being alkaline. And you may be familiar with Dr. Weil who also disagrees with the health benefits of alkaline water. In one of his articles, he suggests that the best way to counteract acidity in our bodies is to eat more foods that offer alkalinity such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I wonder if any of these experts have either tried alkaline water or have been impacted by any of the health conditions that drinking alkaline water is suggested to help with. Specifically, alkaline water has been noted for some of the following health conditions:
- May reduce incidence of digestive problems such as heartburn, irritable colon, Crohn’s disease and colitis.
- May reduce risk of and increase relief from urinary tract conditions and uric-acid kidney stones.
- May reduce risk of gout.
- May reduces risk of and helps in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.
- May lower risk of osteoporosis and promotes bone and teeth growth.
- May aid in prevention and treatment of diabetes.
- May reduce hypertension.
- May also reduce the risk of cancer.
Health experts such as Tony Robbins, Dr. Arthur Ecano, Dr. Robert Young, Dr. Susan Lark, Dr. Sherry Rogers, Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, and many others are said to have endorsed alkaline water. You can read more about their endorsement at Awakening-Healing.com.
If these experts do not help to inform you, perhaps testimonies from people who have actually used alkaline water might. Watch the antidepressant-meds.com, you may find it informative when making your decision. Just know that the internet is a powerful tool. A tool that can be used to persuade others positively or negatively.
Having said that, my hope is that if you are using alkaline water that you are reaping the benefits of this controversial fountain of youth and that you check in with your doctor to monitor your overall health.
Thanks again Ann, for your question. And as always,
In good health
